Nations Under Fire: Game 1: Turn 7

Post by ShadowSpectre »

In 2034, an oil deposit was found near the town of Charikar in Afghanistan. By the outbreak of war in 2039, it had long since thrown off the guise of a small farming town barely supporting itself.

In the spring of '40, Afghanistan was, again, the centre of a conflict, this time over its new, but still dwindling oil supplies.

On the 7th of April, 2040, the town of Charikar was set upon by six different nations, all vying for control. Only two of them had actively chosen to capture the town; the others passively enjoined in the Battle for Charikar in an attempt to stop other countries from gaining even this small supply.

The two men touched down as lightly as their training had taught them, though with the thudding of the helicopter overhead, this precaution was wasted. As they detached the lines from the helicopter, it hovered backwards a little, scanning the local area. One of the men waved up to the pilot on board the helicopter as they ran towards the roof entry of the tower block.

The two men were Corporal Hirst and Corporal Floss, Canadian snipers that had recently been drafted into the battle for the Middle East's oil supplies. They wielded huge rifles, practically shoulder cannons, across their backs, and they cleared the topmost floor of the buildings wordlessly, sidearms readied for any possible enemy soldier or combatant waiting to surprise them. Satisfied that they were alone, they took up spots in adjacent rooms' windows, setting up their weapons. Floss was humming slightly as he clicked his rifle into shape.

Neither of them were exactly easily frightened men, but the sudden booming made both start and look up to see a tower of smoke from the east, arcing over towards a building near them. There was rubble falling from the building; it appeared that it was being hit by rockets. Hirst didn't bother checking his scope. The smoke would obscure the view, anyway. He just hoped that they'd been discreet in landing on the building and they didn't attract any similar attention.

"Target destroyed," the driver, Private Reece, chuckled, watching the tower block descend in a plume of dust and rubble in the distance. "God, I love the artillery corps."
"Mm," his co-driver, Private Tends, agreed. "That oughtta strike a few chords in enemy troops."
"Nah," Reece replied, tapping against the grated window, indicating their fellow MLRS nearby, launching missiles, "Hugh and Belle'll be having that honour. Apparently there are a pair o' snipers in that-" he pointed through the slits in the front window, "-block, there."
"I see. How do we know?"
"Belle reckons she saw a chopper drop 'em off, an' command seems to agree."
"Oh, yeah? When did
they get there? Never saw 'em land."
"Who knows? Doesn't matter, I expect casualties soon."
"Good oh. Next target?" Tends asked.
Reece grinned. "The very same."
Tends chuckled, flicking the switches that would rotate the missile batteries. "Casualties soon, indeed."

PureQuestion has captured an oil depot, gaining him 1500RP on the end of his usual supply, and an oil derrick, increasing his income per turn to 1500.

Spider's AA unit caught Hyphen's helicopter group almost immediately after it landed; the heavy chopper took moderate damage, one light attack helicopter took a raking of fire, and the other light chopper escaped damage.

Dabir's MLRS units have destroyed a building in the city and have damaged PQ's garrisoned building.

Hyphen has allied himself with PureQuestion and Spriterkid. His units will no longer fire on their units.

"Okay, we're clear!" Corporal Aveen shouted to the men aboard the helicopter above, waving. It wasn't like they'd hear the shout, but the gesture did the trick; the chopper floated backwards above them, and the immediate noise levels slightly decreased. Three helicopters were over the mountain base, one hovering over the old hangar bay of the base and another just arriving, both carrying a squad of engineers, and one carrying Aveen and his spotter, Private Andrew. He turned to his partner and gestured at the small residential block.
"Better get inside and set up!" he shouted.
Andrew hadn't heard him, but knew the routine enough to understand.
"Loud bastards, the birds!" Andrew yelled across to his partner over the heightening noise from helicopters.
"They are!" Aveen yelled back, shielding his eyes against the dust thrown up by the thrum of rotors. "Wonder when they'll piss off and leave us to get to b-"

A huge explosion cut him off. Both of them wheeled around in surprise, receiving a faceful of dust for their troubles. The helicopter that had joined the trio last was now a blazing fireball, spewing flaming oil, broken glass and burning men across the base, careening out of the air. A plume of smoke denoted the path of a rocket fired from above. A glance upwards informed the snipers of who fired it; a helicopter high above them, raining cannon fire on the Russian troops. The engineers dropping from the furthest helicopter began ziplining down with much less caution for safety, running into the hangar in the distance. Two more helicopters had arrived, both shooting at the Russian choppers. Fire was returned, and Aveen grabbed Andrew's arm.
"Come on!" he shouted, dragging him into the building; the drop in noise levels was alarming. "If those hostiles start dropping troops, we have to provide cover fire," Aveen reminded his partner. "Come on, set up!" Andrew nodded and ran off to find a stairwell.

Aveen went a different route, notifying Andrew via radio, but it appeared that there were two staircases, and they both arrived at higher levels, setting up quickly. Aveen glanced up; it appeared that the engineers on the ground had commandeered a couple of hummvees and an APC; they seemed to be doing well. A small explosion made him flinch, and a helicopter came crashing down. Aveen leaned from the window, anxious to see if there were survivors. It appeared that the helicopter was not one of their own (a sigh of relief) and that there was no movement asides from the creaking metal and creeping flames. He returned to his gun and grinned. Mother Russia wasn't going to lie down and play
that nicely.
Hyphen's helicopter squadron had mixed results from its attack on Spider. The first of Spider's helicopter deposited its snipers who ran into a building without incident. Spider's choppers all took damage from the arrival of Hyphen's squadron, but an AT squad firing from the underbelly of one of Hyphen's choppers dropped another of Spider's helicopters from the sky, including its onboard team of engineers. The third's engineer squad dropped from the helicopter and captured the reinforcement bay, taking control of two MTTs and an APC. All three returned fire, and one of Hyphen's light choppers was taken down, including its onboard sniper. The skirmish continues.

Elsewhere, Spider's new heavy chopper performed a textbook fly-by attack on Hyphen's light tank.

PureQuestion's two man sniper team suffered one casualty as Dabir's MLRS units bring their building down.

Spriterkid has allied himself with Hyphen and PureQuestion. His units will no longer fire on their units.

Sergeant Williams puffed the cigarette, coaxing the drug to begin its slow seep into his system, pocketing his lighter. It was a clear day; a single, spear-like bank of clouds in the distance were the only break in the light blue of Afghanistan's spring skies. He squinted before waving to the AA vehicle crew- one of them, at least- as they walked past in the bright sunlight, carrying a few containers of fuel from the reinforcement bay that had been commandeered. The reclaimed AA vehicles were all manned by engineers; they weren't bad, each had training enough to be as good as a private in his first battle, but they lacked the fluency of the language a soldier's machines spoke.

He blew smoke. Didn't matter, there was a sizeable force here. He sighed, looking up at the crew returning for more fuel. He liked being a gunner for APCs, it was an awful lot better than being a mudmover with an assault rifle. He had hated the basic training they all had to go through, but it was for the best, given the militaries Iberia was up against.

The Iberian Alliance was a fairly strong nation in terms of the combatants of this world war. Combinations of countries always were; the nations standing alone were usually at a disadvantage. He was interested to see how Iberia's military truly stacked up against a country like, say, Germany. Though he supposed that the likelihood was that Germany would ally itself to central European nations soon enough.

He discarded ashes from his cigarette with a tap. He'd find out about Germany soon enough. He was, for the moment, content. The clouds had covered the sun, so it wasn't beating down on him. Sure, there was a little yelling from the men, but there was probably a small disagreement over a wager.

Williams sighed, lying back, arms crossed over behind his head. The clouds were a lot lower than he'd realised. And a little greyer than usual, too. He would have thought that they were rain clouds, if not for the black dot in the middle getting rapidly larger and lar-

Dabir's MLRS levelled every single one of SK's units around the Reinforcement bay. His others collapsed a building garrisoned by PQ's sniper.

Spider's light choppers took down Hyphen's heavy helicopter above the mountain base, but not before it blew his APC to pieces. The hummvees turned fire on Hyphen's light chopper, which, in its final moments, with the garrisoned AT squad's aid, destroyed a light helicopter.

Spider's heavy chopper continues to pound at Hyphen's stoic medium tank, but it's only just holding on.

"Jesochristo," Corporal Abella breathed, slipping into her native tongue as she scanned the wreckages of tanks on the ground below. "Looks like a scrapyard, Adalbert 1."
"Agreed, Adalbert 2," her flight leader, Staff Sergeant Brightmine confirmed over the radio. "Keep an eye out for survivors."
"Roger," Abella replied before hesitating. "Sir, we've got a bird on radar, firing permissions?"
"Granted."
"Don't get in the way; you remember Cordova?" she chuckled, watching the enemy helicopter move towards them, weapons cold.
"God, do I ever. It's moving towards us, keep ready. I'm going to move in for an intercept route," Brightmine added.
"I copy, happy hunting, Adalbert 1," Abella said, brushing the trigger for her autocannon in anticipation.
"We are weapo-" Brightmine began, cut off by the sudden screech of a locked missile. Abella barely shrieked in panicked surprise before her fellow helicopter exploded in a ball of flame and metal. She hammered the cannon button, still in shock as her chopper's chin gun flashed.

Dabir's light chopper launched a deadly air-to-air missile and blew SK's heavy chopper from the sky. SK's light chopper took advantage of the moment to rake the enemy with cannon, but it failed to down the opposition.

En route to the southeast, Hyphen's light tank was destroyed by GD's chopper. Spider's AA tank, which was in the area, spotted the helicopter and bled flak in its direction. GD's chopper took heavy damage.

A little further south, Hyphen's medium tank was destroyed by Spider's heavy chopper, which was intercepted and heavily attacked by its British counterpart.

"Target in sight," Corporal Ferris declared over the radio to his partner. He was feeling more confident than during training, where he had had a much more rickety bird, an old Griffon chopper, and a mischievous fighter pilot had spooked him to the point that he nearly tilted the helicopter out of control. The helicopter he was using was an AH-1Z Viper, a much more modern aircraft, despite being introduced three decades ago.

"Understood, Sparrow 2," his sergeant squawked back. Ferris felt a moment of relief; he hadn't been left alone. Sergeant Harrison was a reliable officer who had acted as a guide for Ferris' hopeless nerves problem, but Ferris disliked giving him much credit or gratitude. He waited for the instructions from his superior anyway: "Firing permissions are granted, at will, Corporal."
"Roger, Sparrow 1," Ferris said, grinning. First combat experience was always thrilling.

The MLRS system seemed mostly inactive, which was interesting. Ferris could see the possibility of a first kill, here, and of a fairly valuable enemy. This'd get him a few drinks. He flicked open the missile tab, waiting to press the button to unleash a salvo of missiles upon the (hopefully) unsuspecting artillery screw below. "Nearly at location, Sparrow 1."
"I know, 2. You don't have to update me every few hundred metres."
"Understood Sparrow 1."
"Eyes open, 2, activity."
Ferris duly peered at the ground, pulse quickening, where the MLRS suddenly grew into a huge cloud. "It's firing, trajectory indicates the town," Ferris reported.
"Shit, that's where Oscar platoon is!" Harrison barked back. "Fire, take that target down ASAP!"
"Copy, Sparrow 1!" Ferris called, the blood pumping in his ears, pressing the trigger. The Viper shuddered as a rocket pod loosed a volley of projectiles into the white mass of cloud. "Impact in six, five, four, three, and we have... contact!" Ferris said excitedly, gaining altitude.
"Noted, Sparrow 2, good job," Harrison approved. There was a moment of silence before the radio crackled again: "Sparrow 1, we still have missiles coming from that MLRS."
Ferris' enthusiasm dropped immediately. "Say again, Sparrow 1?"
"I said... you know what, I got it, Sparrow 2, going to curve North and perform a fly by," the sergeant said. The radio masked the frustration in his voice.
"Roger, I'm falling into formation," Ferris responded, slowing pushing the control stick into a slow sweep behind his squad leader.

Barely had they begun changing vector before Harrison yelled over the intercom, "Shit, fire!" and his helicopter banked left harder. Ferris instinctively pulled his stick back, and the helicopter reared back, threatening to tilt backwards. Suddenly, several loud thumps were heard. A yell of alarm and a few frantic corrections later, the helicopter was veering backwards from a flurry of cannon fire. Ferris was beginning to feel panic, and barely heard the radio shriek of his partner go down as he pulled back, acting on instinct to get out fast, and get out alive.

Dabir's MLRS levelled PQ's town square force, and threw up enough smoke to escape the wrath of the Canadian attack helicopters. The light helicopter was cut down from beyond its weapon range by Dabir's anti-aircraft batteries.

Elsewhere, Spriter's helicopter was downed by Dabir's light chopper loosing an air-to-air missile, and Hyphen's heavy chopper was shot to pieces by four separate enemies, all controlled by Spider, whose medium tank also dealt a heavy blow against GD's AA tank.

"Approaching waypoint Romeo, now!" Private Sann yelled to the driver of his AA tank, tilting down the anti-aircraft cannons as their vehicle neared the sniper team talking to the pilot of the landed heavy attack helicopter. "Soldiers! We're back for repairs, where's the engineer squad?"

The sniper team and chopper pilot looked at him blankly. The only other features of the waypoint were the empty crates and used parachutes of troops that had already arrived. Sann looked around in confusion. "Who gave us these coordinates? We're lookin' at squat!"

PQ's heavy chopper near Dabir's troops attempted to fire an antitank missile at the nearest MLRS, but in his panic, the pilot launched it wild, causing Dabir's formation to break. However, the missile was ineffective, and the AA tanks came into range and cut the helicopter from the sky.
