The first time I fought this boss, I went through it so quickly I didn't see all the attacks. It's no surprise drac said this could be beaten in about 5 minutes. I decided to go through it again, just so I can see what I missed and thus make a fairer review. Also, I will point out the timestamps in which the phases appear so following along can be a bit easier.
One thing that all of the phases have in common are that they are... well... lackluster, to say the least. Oh well, A for effort in that department. Anyway, let's continue.
FIRST PHASE (0:00 – 0:35):
I like that the individual weapons can be destroyed. In fact, it's a bit of a necessity, given that you have to destroy the front turrets in order to shoot the core. Once those turrets are out of the way, the rest isn't a threat. Well, maybe the ion ring cannon that spawns where the turrets were, but only if you aren't paying any sort of attention. Speaking of which, it's kind of silly how you can just blow up the ion ring cannon to transition to the next phase. The design for this one is probably the best. However, since it took up so much parts, the same can not be said for the following phases.
SECOND PHASE (0:36 – 1:23):
This is where things go by a bit too quickly. Seriously, I didn't even get to see the first attack finish the first time I played it. Anyway, the first attack is nice. You've got bullets shooting wherever, and powerballs aimed at you periodically. It's the only attack, though, and this ties in to what I said about the boss's health earlier. Also, the bullets that come off-screen shouldn't be a thing.
THIRD PHASE (1:24 – 2:39):
There isn't as much to dodge compared to the previous two phases, which I guess is a bit of a breather, considering what comes after this. Also, the ion rings in the laser attack disappear before they go off the screen. If you've been picking up those powerups, this part should be over quickly. The next part has nothing interesting in terms of attack patterns. Again, this part should be done in seconds if you've been collecting powerups.
Before I continue, I want to say that I was initially going to mention something about the boss's health and how it should be adjusted. Now that I've played through it again, however, I'm guessing getting the powerups is intentional, otherwise you might not reach these phases. However, as shown in the video, I took the time to show off the patterns and I
still got to these forms. I'm not sure what the trigger is.
FOURTH PHASE (2:40 – 3:29):
Yawn, Evaccania Doom ripoff that I once again only saw one attack finish the first time. The first attack is okay, just don't get walled. Second attack is meh. Third attack is also meh. The final attack it does was a bit tricky at first... and then I realized I had to go within the circle. It's worth noting that in the video, the boss doesn't go to the center like it was supposed to. It stays in that position for the entire fight, making certain sections of the next phase a bit easier.
FINAL PHASE (3:40 – 5:37):
And then there's this. This is the part where I go a bit more into detail since you can't bypass the attacks quickly; you have to sit them out.
The first attack is simple enough. Dodge the powerballs and the bullets. The second and third attacks are kind of easy, especially for an extra form. And then there's attack four. The big "fuck you" attack. I'm pretty sure this one is impossible to not die on.
I mean, just look at it. Those ion rings come out very fast, and they're so big that you're going to run out of room to dodge in a matter of seconds, if that. Of course, this attack is a bit easier if you somehow make the boss end up closer to the top of the screen like I did in the video. The fifth attack, by comparison, isn't as bad. Sure, it's still tough, but it's at least possible to not die on. The sixth attack comes in with no break in between. Thankfully, it's easy to dodge. The last attack is kind of easy, I guess, but it's just as easy to mess it up and die. If you wait it out long enough, the bullets from the missiles do not spawn because the amount of projectiles on the screen surpass the bullet limit.
Well, that wraps that up. This boss, while having decent attacks, had a lot of wasted potential. The difficulty of the attacks keep jumping around instead of having a nice, smooth curve. The designs for all the forms are decent at best. Also it could probably use a bit more health in some places.
